Salt Lake City has a dozen accredited nursing schools. These colleges and universities offer a diverse range of nursing programs, from brief certificates to undergraduate and graduate degrees. The city’s aspiring nurses can pursue one of four nursing roles: certified nursing assistant (CNA), licensed practical nurse (LPN), registered nurse (RN), or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).

CNAs require the briefest education, just a short certificate program that lasts eight to ten weeks. Utah’s CNAs must also pass a state exam before practicing. Salt Lake City’s CNA certificate programs are offered at vocational schools like Salt Lake Community College and Tooele Applied Technology College. The metro area’s 4,400 CNAs earn about $23,000 annually.

LPNs must complete a lengthier 12- to 18-month certificate program. They must also pass the strenuous NCLEX-PN national licensure examination. The Salt Lake City metropolitan area has over 900 LPNs who earn a median annual salary of $44,500.

RNs may follow one of two prelicensure pathways in Utah: two-year associate’s degree in nursing (ADN) or four-year bachelor of science in nursing (BSN). They must also pass the NCLEX-RN national licensure examination before practicing. Salt Lake City has several accredited ADN programs, available at Salt Lake Community College and local career colleges like AmeriTech and Eagle Gate. Several local schools also offer a prelicensure BSN program, including University of Utah and Westminster College. The metro area’s 10,000 RNs earn roughly $61,000 per year.

APRNs must earn at least a master of science in nursing (MSN) in their field of specialization. Salt Lake City has several universities with accredited MSN programs; for example, Westminster College offers concentrations in nursing administration, nurse anesthesia, and family practice nursing. Salt Lake City’s APRNs are very well compensated. The 900 nurse practitioners in the area typically earn over $90,000 per year, and the city’s nurse anesthetists earn almost $120,000 annually.
